Duke Bolofest '97

In March '97, 10 players from the Duke/UNC area of North Carolina were joined by 2 others from the Northeast for 3 days of Bolo. For a detailed description of the festivities, see the March 17 report (near the bottom of the page) from the Bolo News.

A nice game of localtalk 0.99.2 With no Internet connection, we resort to playing an ancient version of Bolo on Flag's LC, complete with pre-superboom base stealing. From left: Max, Pins, Wintermute, and Flag. Pins demonstrates his split-level mousing skills while Wintermute high-fives an imaginary friend.

When do we start to drink? Jolo watches the game in progress and dispenses sage advice.

Prince Valium arrives Berserkir and Will (not shown) finally arrive at 2:30 am Saturday morning in the fabled Hummer after driving nonstop for 14 hours. Berserkir's first words were, "Where's my [expletive] Guinness?"

Geekfest After some pool and beers, it's 3:30 AM, and we head off to nearby Duke campus to Bolo! We break into a public cluster and set up on two rows of nice new PowerMacs with big screens. At one point a guard hears the commotion and investigates. Berserkir hides his latest Guinness while smoothly lying, "It's OK, we're graduate students, sir." From left, back row: Max, Will (barely showing) and Pins, front row: Berserkir, Wintermute, and Flag.

What's that light in the eastern sky? From left: Max, Will, Pins. After many incredibly great games, Max notes that it is past 6 AM, Will looks like he needs a cigarette after the last game, and Pins tries to egg us on for another game.

Back in the saddle Saturday was a blur, involving Bolo, beer, and insane Hummer adventures. On Sunday, Will (foreground) and Berserkir get in some last games in Jolo and Max's lab.

Big Al Max types out a particularly elegant comment after his ally Will (background) kills his man.

What Gillian Anderson picture? Late Sunday night, Jolo joins in for the final Tix Tox PillBox game from his office across the hall. This was the last time Jolo was known to play Bolo.
