Notation Used in this Dissertation

The words `byte' and `character' will be used interchangeably, especially in the context of the network.

Names of variables or routines or actual commands will be given in Courier font to distinguish them.

Hexadecimal numbers are indicated with an ampersand thus: &FF

In the Graphics chapter, the words `object' and `character' are both sometimes used to refer to the things which are drawn on the screen. Strictly, an object should mean an object in the game, in its internal representation in the model, and a character should mean the pictorial display of that object on the screen. The two are properly different things, but sometimes the distinction is blurred.

The table of characters on the screen is called the `object list' in the program -- a misleading title which invites misunderstanding. Unfortunately, at the time this part of the program was being developed I was not being very strict about the terminology I used.
