It appears that news of IBL Sunday night's demise was a little premature.
I was so excited that I decided to post this before Monday's games. We had
12 players show up, all on time, all without lag. Organizing divisions was
beautifully simple and stress-free for once, and we started games a few
minutes early! Div 1 was 3/4 Europeans, introducing DonkeyShot, a Swedish
player of about Cliffa and WD's ability. Div 2 included some hardcore
working-class Bolo talent and turned out to be the most hard fought games.
Div 3 was made up of all newbies, which was perfect too. Afterwards we
played 5x5 PBL bolofest games for over 2 hours, some of the *best* Bolo
I've played in the last few years. That's described in a separate post.

Here's a short #bolo log where fish describes his exciting div 1 games, and
I describe some of the div 2 games which I watched over Pins & Flag's
shoulders.

fish: I actually thought that me and Donkey might steal one from cliffa/WD

fish: but donkeys side collapsed quicker than I anticipated and I couldnt
back him up

fish: cliffa/WD were trying some long range spikes, and I was gunning lgm
like crazy for a while
fish: eventually they pinned us tho
Jolo: fast games, u reported your outcome barely an hour after we started

fish: the last game, me and cliffa, took about 1:30

fish: I took 3 pills without any ammo

fish: then I came back, saw donkey shooting a double, fucked him over and
took 2 pills without taking a hit

shooting a neutral in the middle, and I stole it and spiked

fish: so we had 4 pills in the first 20 seconds

Jolo: well div 2 guys are mired in these 45 min see-saw games

Jolo: i watched part of the Pins & Lance v. Drad & Flag
Jolo: Pins was yakking away cuz he thought he had it
fish: damn thats a tough division
Jolo: while i watched, they lost 5 pbs

Jolo: yeah lots of new talent
fish: drad/flag have been playing during the day with/against me in the last
couple of weeks, and they have been rocking
Jolo: people like drad & flag have come up from raw newbies a year ago and
now kick ASS
fish: yeah
Jolo: i was awed to watch Pins and Flag playing on opp. sides of same room
Jolo: their hands and fingers were flying
Jolo: i felt vertigo just watching Flag's screen, he was doing pill view
every 2 secs
fish: heh
fish: guy does that also
fish: guy checks pillview more than humanly possible
Jolo: yeah actually i think flag prob spent 30-50% of his time in pillview
Jolo: he'd keep driving and shit while pill viewing

Monday Night IBL
Division 1 went well without any problems.

Div 2b1: Samhain PBnJ Will Drad. (Samhain went 3-0.)
Game 1: Samhain & PBnJ > Will & Drad.
Team A was favored by 629 points. By winning, each gained 2 points.
Game 2: Samhain & Will > PBnJ & Drad.
Team A was favored by 313 points. By winning, each gained 14 points.
Game 3: Samhain & Drad > PBnJ & Will.
Team A was favored by 151 points. By winning, each gained 30 points.
Overall point changes: Samhain +48 PBnJ -42 Will -18 Drad +13

There was a second division but it was ruined by spectre's lag, Grimm and
ultraman wanting to watch football, and Krempic having to leave early. Not
to rag on those guys specifically, but WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! It is *very*
frustrating to your organizers to give up their evenings to run these
things, when the players can't be bothered to take some responsibility.
Just to remind you:
1. Don't show up unless you can play for at least 2 hours. Leaving early
is grounds for ejection for IBL, because it ruins a division and is unfair
to your division mates. By all means have a life, just don't do it on IBL
nights.
2. Take some initiative when testing lag! This stuff is taken care of in a
matter of seconds in a pickup game, but people somehow turn into idiots for
IBL. Many times we'll tell 4 people to go test their lag, and 10 minutes
later it turns out 2 of them were playing games and a 3rd person was busy
jerking off or something. This is infuriating. At 15 minutes before the
start time, please stop playing/jerking off and pay attention. When we
tell you to test your lag, do it dammit, and if there is lag, identify the
usual suspects and report back to #ibl immediately, so that we might try to
reshuffle the divisions or sub in somebody else. In any case, talk to us.
We can't organize stuff if we don't know wtf is going on.
3. Stop pissing us off dammit! :(
On that note, I'm gonna go get some coffee. You guys are driving me back
to drinking. Grrrr.

PBL rox!!!
The first week of Pseudo Bolofest League turned out to be a blast! Even
more suprising, we had 4x4 and 5x5 games without too much lag given only 3
players at Duke! The players included Fish, Pins, Flag, Jolo, Will,
Lancelot, Drad, whirlpool, ultraman, Krempic, tzunami, and later vert for
not 1 but 3 games of Tix Tox Pillbox (cuz we were having way too much fun
to quit after just 1). The attached picture shows key sequences from all 3
games.

Above is a sample tracker output from the 2nd game, some bizzare big ass
map. Jolo, Pins, drad, and fish were allied against the others. Right
from the get-go we roxed, coordinating strategy with nonstop messages. We
took out the W. coast and slowly pushed towards the center. For the
longest time Fish then held down the center solo against 2-3 attackers in
an ugly Alamo defense, but it worked, b/c in the meantime the other 4 of us
were everywhere else kicking ass. Lancelot hated the map for being so big,
so we moved on to an Oil Rig variant afterwards. Now *that* was a mess.
Pillwars raged all over the map. Fish jumped out to an early lead, spiking
both of our quads. Through teamwork and a little luck, we kept unspiking
and gradually built back up to a pill and then base lead. Fish's team held
out valiantly against onslaught after onslaught of pills and kamikazes
(when you got 4 on your team, mass suicides can be awfully powerful), but
in the end we won.
After a few more big crazy 4x4 or 5x5 games, it was time for Tix Tox
Pillbox to wrap it all up. The objective of TTPB is to be in possession of
the sole pill at the end of the game which is time-limited to 10 mins. The
first game included some of the most heated jousts I can remember. In the
exciting last few seconds, Fish was chasing Jolo who was chasing Pins who
had the pill but no trees to plant it yet. I'm pumping shots into Pins
left and right, but slowly to conserve my ammo since Fish is only 4 squares
behind me. Finally I kill Pins and the pill is dead, but at that
instant... TIME EXPIRES!!!! It was the first tied TTPB I've ever seen!

The 3rd game was even more insane. Early in the game, I make a break for
the 1st ring outside the main arena. Normally any game that progresses to
the rings hugely favors the guy with the pill, since it's so far away from
the starting spots that the others can't come at you quite as quickly.
Twice I died when I had only 1 armor left and somebody from either the
inside or outside rings dec'd my own pill into me. Twice I miraculously
made it back in time to save the pill. Finally I outjoust 2 others,
burning all my ammo and most of my armor, and I grab the pill and head deep
into the trees in the outer ring. I guess I wasn't fast enough to duck
into the trees, because vert sees me and starts a brilliant chase, shooting
every 3rd tree in a perfect rhythm to keep gaining on me. I waited too
long before munching trees, still hoping against hope that vert hadn't seen
me and was just pursuing in my direction randomly. Next thing I know there
is a pack of 4 tanks up my ass (vert/smack, Fish/TTPBchamp, whirlpool, and
I think drad), and Pins in the meantime cleverly comes alongside in the
parallel inner ring to flank. There was no time to stop, munch 1 tree, and
plant the pill, plus I wasn't sure how much time was left, and if I planted
too early, it'd just get taken immediately by the 5 players there. An ugly
fire fight ensued and Fish comes away with it as time expired...

fish: and somehow, made it out alive
Jolo: twice somebody got me while on outer ring
Jolo: i fuxed up

Jolo: outfuxingstanding
All in all, these PBL games were some of the very best Bolo I've ever
played, as good as the actual Chicago Bolofest that I attended last year.
This is definitely a regular event from now on, either every Sunday or
every other Sunday.
