PBL PBL PBL!!!
In case you haven't heard of the expression, a "Bolofest" is when a bunch
of people gather at one school/company and spend a weekend or so playing
Bolo and partying nonstop. There are several Bolofests a year, most
recently in Chicago.
Last weekend we had a modified Bolofest at Duke, where the 6 players here
(Jolo, Max, Wintermute, Pins, Nutz, >) all got together and played with 6
or so other people on the Internet. Because the 6 at Duke were all on the
same subnet and added no extra lag, and the others were all at low-lag
locations, we managed to play 5x5 and 6x6 games over 2 hours with lag < 250
ms and virtually no errors. This is after all what Bolo's ring topology
was optimized for -- big ass local area network games! Ironically, we had
more people participating in this Bolofest than any recent IBL night. It
was so much fun that we decided to try to make it a regular event!
So here's what I'm thinking... this Sunday we will IBL at 6 pm EDT as
usual, to see what the interest level is. Afterwards, at 8 pm or so, if
the Duke players are not too tired, we will try out this bolofest idea.
There will be no rankings or rules or any of that stuff. People will just
show up and play. In the future if this becomes a regular event, we'll
cancel IBL for that night and meet at 8 pm or something like that, and if
you're late you just don't get in. These pseudo-bolofests will necessarily
be fairly elitist, invitation-only events, so I apologize in advance to all
newbies or people at all but the least laggy places (like Aero, Michigan,
Swat, Duke, Chicago, and a few others). Basically we'll pick up players
whom we know and trust, people who will have fun and not muck it up for
everybody else. If you're interested, be on IRC! This thing won't be
formally organized like IBL, so it's whatever you guys let it evolve into!
Jolo
