Gold Cup taken by Michigan!

(A copy of this message has also been posted to the following newsgroups:
rec.games.bolo)

Ye Olde Golde Cuppe was taken by Michigan after an exhausting 3 hour slugfest.
Here's how it went down. The teams were:

Team Aero Samhain, nofx, drad (from Texas)
Team Duke Max, Pins, Jolo (sub)
Team Euro Cliffa, Wild Duck, Berserkir (sub)
    Team Mich Diamond, Severian, Hoov
Team Vandy Cat_butt, mug_wump, Buck Naked, Sir Isaac (sub)

It got off to a frustrating start b/c lots of people were late again, and
'nosho'Wmute and Scum'AWOL'bag were unexpectedly missing. Then Vandy's lag
started to act up (surprise!) and Buck Naked had to go deal with his SO after 1
game. By the time Aero and Michigan finished their 1st game, the rest were
still missing people or trying to set up a game. Eventually we got subs for all
the missing personnel, Vandy dropped out after 1.5 games, and Jolo stopped
pulling out what was left of his hair.

The teams were interesting. Aero is headed up by highest ranked player Samhain,
who is used to teaming with above-average nofx and Aero protege drad. Max and
Pins had plenty of talent for Duke but were not used to playing together, in
spite of a good night's warm up, and we won't even mention me. For Euro, Cliffa
and Wild Duck would have been formidable with Scumbag (arguably the best player
in Europe, right up there with Mel), but had to settle at the last minute for
Berserkir without any teamwork practice. After some scary no-show threats that
potentially would've left Diamond solo, Michigan turned out to be a grand
reunion of 3 players with plenty of individual talent (all ranked higher than
anybody else present except Samhain) who were used to playing together in the
classic Michigan style. Finally Vandy again was headed up by talent and used to
working as a team.

ROUND 1. *ding* Round robin 3x3s all on Dream Soda V. I was warned that,
contrary to my own experiences, this map was spike-prone. It worked out
reasonably well, with most games lasting 20 minutes or so. Results determined
seedings for round 2.

     M E D A

  M x M M A Basically Aero went 3-0, Michigan 2-1, Euro 1-2, Duke 0-3.
E x E A Samhain's team seemed to win on consistent strategy and
D x A team work. From my vantage point, all of the other teams
A x played impressively, at a level I have never seen before.

ROUND 2. *FIGHT!* 4 teams, full tournament, Slugfest XXIV. The seedings were
thus 1.Aero v. 4.Duke, 2.Michigan v. 3.Euro, then winners go on to fight for
championship while losers play consolation game to determine 3rd/4th place.
Aero trashed Duke on a supposedly rape-proof map when Samhain went behind the
lines right after the base run and ambushed us hard. To be fair, nofx and drad
were formiddable, taking down their quads and advancing a choking double front.
Michigan also prevailed over Europe quickly, sorry no details there (feel free
to follow this post).

In the final round consolation game, Duke stole Aero's strategy and used it to
lethal advantage against Europe. I went behind the lines right after the base
run and ambushed WD during a pill take, killed him, vultured the pill, and took
out the safe corner base. Europe never regained use of that quad. Meanwhile
Max and Pins brought up the pills and eventually choked off their other quad in
a combination pill war and spikefest. There were claims of lag, but all in all
I thought it was an excellent game.

Final round CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. I knew this was a good game b/c it lasted nearly
50 minutes. This is 95% verbatim from Samhain/nofx. Aero started west / umich
east, we took our respective quads and proceeded to take pills, umich at a
faster initial rate. Samhain went to the back to base-run and was killed so that
gave them a little extra time. I sent a pill to the opposing upper quad to deter
a pill take, that was the start of a huge pill war in the north. Pills were
traded all game in the north. In the south drad was trying to hold his quad and
attack the center. Somewhere in here was a crucial fuxup in which drad killed
Samhain's lgm during a take and didn't get the pill either. From there it was
uphill for Aero all the way. Samhain was supporting all fronts. Soon Aero was
prone to base-runs from the south and were down to a few bases but had a least
1/2 the pills, most of them were carried by Samhain and nofx. nofx was going to
try and reinforce the south when he was whacked by Sev, those pills were
immediately sent to spike. Aero played to their strengths (pill lines) and that
cost them the game.

FINAL STANDINGS (with results from each round shown):
1. MICHIGAN (2-1, 2-0)
2. AERO (3-0, 1-1)
3. DUKE (0-3, 1-1)
4. EUROPE (1-2, 0-2)

Thanks to everybody who participated. I'm going to take a break from Bolo for a
month or more. If somebody else wants to organize the Platinum 1x1 Cup, by all
means go ahead. It's been fun!

Thu Aug 22 09:54:36 EDT 1996 Gold Cup team roster to date I have firm commitments from the following people for Gold Cup: Team Duke Max, Wmute, Pins Team Vandy Cat_butt, mug_wump, Buck Naked aka wimpy Team AeroWest Samhain, nofx, drad (nofx's apprentice in TX) Team Michigan Diamond, Severian, TBA (goob, Lancelot, or slymouse) Team Europe Cliffa, Wild Duck, TBA (Mel? scumbag?) Recapping the important info: 3x3 2 rounds, probably round robin followed by full tournament meet on ABOnet #ibl on Monday Aug 26, 7:45 pm EDT approximately 2 to 2.5 hours time commitment ABOnet, in case you never heard of it before (which is likely since I just made that name up), is the Association of Bolo Organizations network. To get there, /server ray.abo.fi 6666 (or 6667) and /join #ibl. Jolo
Date: Tue Aug 20 14:31:09 EDT Gold Cup Annoucement!!! In case you missed it, this was at the end of the previous "Red Cup results" post from Sunday night... > Next Monday Aug 26 at 8 pm EDT, 3x3 Gold Cup tournament! Similar rules > apply, only this time I refuse to stress out. If you want to play, get > your own teams together (no need to be at exact same school/company, just > no local lag and minimal global lag). Email me ASAP but no later than > Friday so that I can keep everybody informed, then just show up on time on > CliffaNet #ibl by 7:45 pm EDT. > > I'm also thinking another 2x2 Red Cup in the middle of Fall IBL. Thanks > to everybody who participated tonight, and cya next Monday! Wild Duck asked: > BTW, why is the Cup so late? :-( > And why on Monday? > It's not sure that Scumbag can play with Cliffa+WD... Well, it's the regular IBL time, and permits the W. Coast Aero team to play right after work (8 pm EDT = 5 pm PDT). So far Team Duke is looking good... both Pins and Wmute are available to join Max. Team Aero headed up by Samhain seems interested too. Diamond is going to try to summon up Michigan's old glory days. Guy & Fish, if you've recovered from drowning your sorrows in beer, any interest in finding a third (maybe AceQ can drive up for this one)? Team Euro... maybe you can find Mel? I hesitate to mention pesty because I have not personally witnessed his alleged high-bandwdith office link, but his regular IBL link will not be adequate for Gold Cup. As far as maps go, after some #bolo discussion, it seems that most people know and like Slug 29 as a 1st round map b/c it's small but not too small. Then maybe we'll go to a Mutatis/DC-class map for the finals. Total time commitment: plan on about 2 hours (6 games). Jolo

Red Cup News

The Gold Cup News is above. The following is news for the Red Cup which was held on Aug 18, 1996.

Date: Sun, 18 Aug 1996 19:55:00

RED CUP RESULTS!

In a shocking last-minute upset, Santa & grinch win it all! Here are
the details. After all the chaos, four teams showed up to play, which
was just perfect time-wise. Mel never showed, leaving Scumbag without a
partner. Chopin and the UMich players (Dia, goob, Sev, and Lancelot)
likewise never showed. The 4 teams left were approximately ranked:
    - Team CMich (Guy & Fish)
    - Team Princeton (Santa & grinch)
    - Team Europe (Wild Duck & Cliffa)
    - Team Duke (Max & Jolo)

During the first round which took 1 hour, we played round robin games.
The outcomes are shown below (winners indicated inside the array):

            CMich Princeton Euro Duke
          + ----- --------- ------ -------
CMich | x CMich CMich CMich
Princeton | x Princeton Princeton
Euro | x Euro
Duke | x

All games were on CT96. Basically, all of the games were won by the
higher seed. Guy & Fish went 3-0 while Max & Jolo went 0-3. This set
up the 2nd round, a full tournament, where all games were played on CT3:
    seed 1: CMich (3-0)
    seed 2: Princeton (2-1)
    seed 3: Europe (1-2)
    seed 4: Duke (0-3)

In the 1st game, "outer" seeds 1 & 4 (CMich vs. Duke), CMich cruised to
another easy win and looked pretty much unbeatable. Meanwhile "inner"
seeds 2 & 3 put up a closer fight, but again no surprise as Princeton
beat Europe.

The championship game was between the winners: CMich and Princeton.
From the beginning, Guy roxed Grinch pretty hard, while Santa held Fish
at bay. The inevitable spikes came, but grinch and Santa held their
cool and unspiked quickly, then fought back and had the advantage for
most of the end game, eventually pulling off the upset and winning the
Red Cup. In the consolation game, Max & Jolo put up another valiant
effort but eventually lost to WD & Cliffa. Round 2 took about 45
minutes, so the whole tournament (including setup) took only 2 hours.

The final standings were CMich and Princeton both at 4-1 (Princeton won
the championship game and thus wins in spite of the tie), Europe went
2-3, and Duke ended up 0-5. :( In the end, Santa and grinch showed they
still rox, Guy & Fish were unstoppable by anybody else, Europe put in a
good showing, and Jolo fuxing sux. Most importantly, good games were
had by all. Even Max, my unfortunate 0-5 partner, exclaimed "This is
much more fun than IBL!" Afterwards, Santa and grinch had to go
dating/driving, so the other 3 teams got together for a madcap 2x2x2 on
"World" map.

GOLD CUP ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

Next Monday Aug 26 at 8 pm EDT, 3x3 Gold Cup tournament! Similar rules
apply, only this time I refuse to stress out. If you want to play, get
your own teams together (no need to be at exact same school/company,
just no local lag and minimal global lag). Email me ASAP but no later
than Friday so that I can keep everybody informed, then just show up on
time on CliffaNet #ibl by 7:45 pm EDT.

I'm also thinking another 2x2 Red Cup in the middle of Fall IBL. Thanks
to everybody who participated tonight, and cya next Monday!

Date: Sat, 17 Aug 1996 16:02:42 RED CUP LIVES! This is being posted to rgb and the web site, but emailed only to those who are potentially participating in the Red Cup. The following are the confirmed Red Cup teams and their IBL ratings. In order to let everybody play a reasonable number of games against the most number of teams, and to allow for last-minute joiners, we will determine seeding by round robin in the 1st round (everybody plays everybody else), instead of some hierarchic single/double elimination. During the 2nd round, those with similar records from the 1st round will settle it with more game(s). Team CMich: Guy Fish 2052 + 1883 = 3935 Team Euro: Cliffa WD 1673 + 1800 = 3473 Team UK: Scumbag Mel 1600 + 1558 = 3158 Team Duke: Max Jolo 1726 + 1278 = 3004 As of now Saturday PM, Team Michigan and Princeton are still in disarray. Diamond and Chopin still cannot find reliable partners (grinch is celebrating his first driver's license by lapping a parking lot and goob is romancing his fiancee). The use of the round robin system will let them join at the last minute without messing up the tournament matchups. If indeed we do have 6 or more teams, I might consider a single or double elmination 1st round instead. Meet on CliffaNet by 5:30 PM EDT to warm up and to deal with pre-game instructions etc. (If you don't know the time, get on IRC and /ctcp Jolo TIME -- 5:30 PM is 17:30 in 24-hour-time.) Be prepared to play 3-6 games! We will play a small map for the 1st round (CT3 or CT96?), then a medium map for the 2nd round (Easter Island 3, Dream Soda 5, etc.), both maps chosen by myself before we start. Jolo
Update to team rosters Date: Fri, 16 Aug 1996 19:28:51 > The rendez-vous will be on #bolo or on #IBL (Cliffa's server, ray.abo.fi) ? > > -Wild Duck Yes, meet on Cliffanet like for IBL by 5:30 pm EDT (/server ray.abo.fi 6666, /join #ibl). It is important that everybody be on time, this is not IBL where some just show up at the last minute, because I need to make tournament matchups and cannot do so until everybody is seeded etc. I was hoping to be able to announce the team rosters by today (Friday), but last minute changes keep cropping up. Here is what I know... Definitely showing: Team Euro: Cliffa + WD Team UK: Scumbag + Mel Probably showing: Team CMich (some combination of Guy, Fish, AceQ) Jolo with Max assuming he gets back from his trip in time Dia with somebody, possibly goob if Amber says it's OK Possibly will show: grinch possibly with somebody, maybe Chopin? Lancelot possibly with a UMicher, maybe Sev if he's done moving Guy with a new partner, maybe Lance? Cancellations: Santa can't make it -- work and alleged woman Scuzzi & Drad (Team Cinderella) If you have not signed up yet (everybody except the Europeans), I urge you to email your prospective partners IMMEDIATELY to work it out, then IMMEDIATELY email me to let me know. At this point, screw the geographic proximity rule... if you and your partner can have very low lag games to the rest of the world, you're welcome to join! If I don't hear from you by Saturday noon, you will not be able to play. Jo"getting a leeettle bit frazzled"Lo
Date: Thu, 15 Aug 1996 11:42:44 Red Cup coming together Here's what I got to date. Everything is final and certain except where I indicate otherwise. All this and future info will be at: http://www.lgm.com/~jyl/IBL/redcup.html WHAT: 2x2, and yes this time I'm sure. Whether or not we do 3x3s next weekend is still up in the air... lets do this 2x2 Red Cup first and see how it goes. WHO: The following people have registered (no particular order): Guy+? AceQ+Fish Team CMich Cliffa+WildDuck Team Europe Dia+goob (?) Team UMich Max+Jolo Team Duke grinch+Santa Team Princeton Scumbag+Mel Team UK Some notes regarding those teams. Guy stepped aside to make room for the original CMich Boloer AceQ, who along with Fish are driving 2 hours to make the Red Cup. Dia needs to check with the wife, and goob with his fiancee, so that team is a tentative. Scumbag is another good UK player, although I have yet to verify that he and Mel will have a good enough network connection. Max will likely barely be back in town from some personal business, and Jolo may have to sit out in order to organize stuff, we'll see about Team Duke. I have not heard from any W. Coast or Chicago players. WHEN: Sunday Aug 18th, 6 pm EDT. Plan on spending at least 2 hours to play 2-3 games, maybe more. Since scheduling is such a pain and so many people are making a special effort to play this one time, I'll try to end it all in one night, instead of dragging out the "finals" to the next weekend. HOW: I'll hold off on actual team matchups until the teams become completely finalized over the next day or so. Originally we talked about best of 3 per matchup. If we had 8 teams, we could do straightforward single/double elimination, but with 5 to 7 teams plus some inevitable last minute changes...? (I'll listen to all advice for what to do given 5, 6, 7, or 8 teams, speak up now though.) Plan on showing up a little early to be able to see the matchups on the web site. Other rules to come. Jolo
Date: Tue, 13 Aug 1996 16:03:49 Max said: >I'd prefer a Monday meeting a little later than 6. Anyone else agree?? Picard said: > I agrre with ya. If we hold something on Monday I think I can make it > then. How about holding the 3x3 tourney next weekend and the 2x2 this > weekend?? Now that team wisconsin is out, that sounds better to more > people. To date I have received only firm commitments from Guy+Fish(+Lance?) and Santa+grinch(+Warrior?). I do not recall anything about Team Wisconsin being "out" -- at least not from Pooh or bump? I have not heard from Cliffa since his original public musing about Team Euro. It seems that everybody else is waiting around to see what happens, but every time I try to make some kind of decision, I end up getting a bunch of dissent after the fact, which makes more people wait around to see what happens. This is making it rather hard to organize the tournament. I'm going to insist that the tournament occur on Sunday at 6 pm EDT. There are too many people with too many opinions and we can't make everybody happy. If you cannot make it on Sunday night, you're out of it. Sorry. :( I originally favored 2x2's because that would encourage maximum participation. However when the only firm responses I received were from 3x3 teams, I thought we might as well try 3x3. In reality those 3x3 teams are easily broken down into a core 2x2 team, such as Guy+Fish and Santa+grinch. So here's the deal... IF you can play Sunday night, email me with your list of teammates, either as a 2x2 or 3x3 team or both ways. No tentative stuff -- talk to your teammates and make sure they are interested too. Do this before Wednesday 8/14. I will decide on or before Thursday 8/15 whether we do 2x2, 3x3, both, or neither this coming Sunday night. Again I must emphasize that because of the need to seed teams in advance for the tournament, I cannot accept last-minute sign-ups. You *must* email me in the next day or so if you want to play in the Red Cup. Jolo
Date: Sun, 11 Aug 1996 17:57:49 2x2 or 3x3? I'm hearing back from as many 3x3 teams as 2x2 teams... not sure yet. We'll make a final decision by Monday or Tuesday. For now just make tentative teams, perhaps 3-man teams with the option of dropping somebody if we do 2x2s. Possible 3x3 teams that have responded: Guy, Fish (returning to CMich just in time), and maybe Lancelot grinch, Santa, maybe Warrior Cliffa, Mel, some other Euro (pesty? WD?)... get this organized Cliffa! Max, Jolo, some other NC player (Pins can't play on Sunday on account of being whipped)... Wmute if he's awake, or Flag? Pooh, bump, somebody from Chicago? (vert! vert! vert!) Details that *are* becoming certain: We'll do seedings by using IBL ratings (when available) plus some judicious manual adjustment (settle down nature, it's not what you're thinking). We'll do best of 3 per matchup, letting each team pick 1 map, then a 3rd map being an official Red Cup map that all matchups must play (CT3, Easter Island 3, etc.). Games will be Sunday 8/18 at 6 pm, meeting at least 15 mins beforehand to organize shit as usual.
Date: Fri, 09 Aug 1996 17:00:49 Some 2x2 teams are shaping up... (not official)... Chopin and somebody else from Princeton (LordX, grinch, Santa?) Guy and Lancelot Cliffa and Mel (or some other Euro) Max and Pins (or Jolo or Wmute if he gets here on time and isn't too jetlagged) Pooh and bump (Team Wisconsin) I haven't heard from any Chicago or Michigan players, but I'm sure they can field a team or two each.
Date: Thu, 08 Aug 1996 16:03:49 Red Cup update!!! I've heard back from a lot of people. I think in order to make it more concrete, I'll specify some basics. This way people can start to plan and practice etc. WHAT: 2x2 teams, for maximum participation since this is the 1st time. Nobody says we can't have 3x3 games afterwards, or the next weekend, etc. Lets just get 2x2 games going first. Register by emailing me. If there are just a few teams, then we'll do best of 3 per match up, winners play winners and losers play losers, etc. If there are lots of teams, it'll be single elimination, possibly 2-3 rounds per night (i.e. play your game, hang out on #bolo and wait to find out who to play next). WHO: Anybody can play, as long as you and your partner are close enough geographically to have no local lag between you. Obviously we will require you to have very clean network connections. It's OK to have "dream teams" -- just keep it reasonably fair so that it's not an obvious blowout. WHEN: first round of games begin Sunday Aug 18 (not this weekend but the following one) at 6 pm EDT. How long it runs and whether we need to meet back the next Sunday (25th) depends on how many teams register. You must register within a week from today (deadline: Thursday Aug 15) so that I can set matchups. This isn't IBL, so don't expect to show up at the last minute and get to play. WHERE:Send registrations to me but other discussion to r.g.b. so that everybody can see what's going on. As the tournament date approaches, I'll set up a web page on deckard to show the match ups etc. WHY: cuz it's fun dammit. HOW: maps and all that crap can be anything that people agree to, I don't care. Play naked if it gets you off. I know I do. Jolo PS: Sure could use some sports-oriented d00d to help me with setting match ups.
