IBL Week 10 News -- End of Season IV, Red Cup Announcement
Date: Tue, 06 Aug 1996 11:14:41
Fellow IBL players and groupies,
IBL's Season IV (summer '96) is over! Despite relatively low
attendance, we carried on through the summer, resulting in some very good
games. I thought it was interesting that when Will and I both had to
excuse ourselves on just one night, a bunch of old timers who had not even
played all season long asked me if IBL was dead. Well let me put those
rumors to an end. Will, myself, and now MHz will continue to run IBL as
long as people want to play. Bolo is not dying... although it appears
some of the older generation of players are.
In the last week of action, we had 2 divisions each night, 1 of which
got messed up. On Sunday night, Cliffa's site dropped off the network for
half an hour, leading to some frustration and bad feelings. We decided
not to count any of the games. Picard in his first (and last) IBL showing
went 3-0 in div 2. He and his friend Eraser almost got kicked out of the
UIC lab that they invaded. The games were certainly a suxfest, but very
close and very exciting.
On Monday night, after the 1st game Flag disappeared and has not been
heard from since, we suspect alien abduction. Division 2 was an unusual
combination of old talent Lancelot, newcomer MHz, rising newbie pesty, and
yours truly. In the 1st game, pesty somehow held off Lancelot in a
ferocious pill war, and kept the game alive for nearly an hour until
Lancelot eventually overpowered him. The other 2 games went faster, due
to my good luck in vulturing 2 pills from pesty at a critical early
juncture in each game. At one point I was carrying 5 pbs (2 that I was
carrying to spike, 2 I stole from pesty, and 1 that I picked up along the
way in enemy territory). In an amazing feat of teamwork, MHz noticed this
and picked up his 2 pbs too... together we spiked out the W, NW, N, NE,
and E of Easter Island III in one sweep. Game over man. :)
Well that's all for this season. Stay tuned to find out when the next
season starts up again... my best guess is the end of September. We may
adjust the days and times... speak up now if you have opinions. In fact
this is the time to give us any sort of feedback. Remember, this is your
league, and it will only be as good as the time and support that you put
into it!
I'm thinking of running a "red cup" style tournament during the
off-season. Follow up to this post in r.g.b. if you're interested. Here
is my proposal (not the rules, just me thinking out loud). We play 2x2
with set teams from each city. I know, Guy & Fish will be hard to beat,
but there's nothing wrong with having favorites in a tournament, and at
least this isn't as lopsided as letting people pick partners from other
cities. We do either single elimination or best-of-3 games on IBL nights,
instead of "mail me and we'll set up a playing time" which never happens.
Winners advance to play other winners, losers play consolation games.
Time commitment is about 2-3 consecutive weeks, either Sunday or Monday
nights or both (depends on how many teams play).
