On Sept 30, 1997, Chris Howard aka mecca came to town to visit us at Duke. He brought along his Wintel laptop and demonstrated the PC clone of Bolo called Armoured Alliance. The following text is from the Bolo News coverage of that day.

Bolofest Recap. The Duke Bolofest is over. We had some severe problems getting going, first trying to get mecca's Wintel laptop onto the network. After nearly an hour (gotta love Wintel plug & play, although some of it was my fault with bad cables etc.) we finally fixed it all, and I played 2 games of Armoured Alliance with Joel the author. Without violating confidentiality, I can enthusiastically confirm what the AA people have been saying all along. The damn thing is eeriely like Bolo. As I drove around Everard, the graphics were entirely different but still recognizable, like Bolo in an alternate universe. The "feel" and timing were extremely close, I felt just like I was driving a Bolo tank. There were some minor differences but I think they were intentional - let's just say taking a pill is a wee bit more challenging. :) Oh, and for the record, Joel kicked my ass, mostly because I spent most of the time struggling with mecca's key settings and going, "Kewl! Look at the little orange man run! Let me see if I can shoot my own man!" The fact that I just plain sux was irrelevant, of course.

Here are some screen shots taken from my second game with Joel.

Picture 1

Jolo vs. Joel on Skew Toy 3. I am pretty much spiked out at this point. Top right shows the tanks, pills, and bases. I own 3 bases and no pills. Along the right side, the bars show I'm down to no bullets and no armor. In the game area, I'm the gray/blue tank in the middle, Joel aka Plastic Fist aka pf is at the bottom in the gray/red tank, the brussel sprouts are trees, the red bullseye is an enemy base, right below that an enemy pill just fired at me.

Picture 2 It might look like Joel crashed and burned, but actually he's stealing 1 of my bases. When you shoot something, there is a little explosion. In this case he was shooting at my base and drove over it just as the screen was captured. Note the multi-line messaging at the bottom left.

Picture 3 A little earlier in the game, when I still had 3 pills and 6 bases - this didn't last very long. Note the pill take I just finished. My gun sights are lined up on my own lgm (actually little orange man) but he wasn't captured properly, lost between frames or something.
