Each column below shows that team's points:

The matrix is symmetric. For every game played, I fill in a loser's score
and a winner's score (2 different squares). Sometimes the winner is above
the diagonal, sometimes he is below - whatever it takes so that when you
add scores vertically, each column corresponds to that team's points gained.
The maximum points gained is 32 per game (1 point for each base and pill).

From: Joseph Lo
Subject: Bolo Red Cup... seedings & final details

Red Cup fans,

At the last minute Guy dropped out because he didn't realize it was
tonight and he is out of town. MHz is looking for a new partner. Hoov
and Sev apparently are playing (email me guys!), so we are essentially
still at 6 teams.

Max, Wmute and I had lunch and talked about the Red Cup TONIGHT. Since
it is impossible to seed these very close teams, we came up with a way
to handle the tournament (it was mostly Max's idea though). With 5 or 6
teams, we don't want to play any sort of elimination tournament where 1
freak loss kicks you out. Instead, we'll play round robin (everybody
plays everybody else). Since Crankcase (the official map on which all
games will be played) is a little big to allow 5 or 6
play-till-you-concede games in one night, all games will be played with
a time limit of 32 minutes, giving you 2 minutes to split the map E/W
and get set up, then 30 minutes to play. This keeps the games short and
will let us finish in about 3 hours. Everybody MUST commit to these 3
hours (until 11 pm EST), if you cannot do so, speak up now.

When time expires at the end of each game, you get 1 point for each
green base or pill (X's and neutrals don't count, carried pb's do
count). The points will be added up across all games and the winner
will be the team with the most points. This may sound weird, but it
keeps things rolling along, rewards people who consistently play well
all night, doesn't punish you too much for 1 freak loss, and encourages
you to play to the bitter end (even a loser scores points by holding on
to a few bases or pills). The jury is still out on whether one will be
allowed to concede the game, because that gives the winner 32 easy
points which may not be fair to other teams.

Some interesting points of strategy to keep in mind. You might hold on
to some points against better teams by stalling and playing defense all
the time, but if you want to win the Red Cup you're going to have to
play aggressively and win most games. In the event of a nearly tied
game, the end-game strategy is crucial. Some might choose to base rape
like crazy, hoping that the stolen bases turn green by the time limit.
There may be other strategies we haven't thought of - plan ahead for
this likely contigency! Splits can be troublesome since they represent
wasted time. It is CRUCIAL that each game be started properly with a
time limit, and that all players note the expiration time so they are
not caught offguard.

So basically meet on the server ray.abo.fi channel #bolo by 7:45 pm EST
tonight, and stay on IRC as much as possible throughout the night so we
can arrange the round robin games. Game results will be updated
immediately at: http://www.lgm.com/bolo/redcup.html so you can
judge your own standings as the night progresses.

From: Joseph Lo Subject: Bolo Red Cup... minor updates Don't freak, just some minor last minute shit. I promise not to mail again until tonight. MHz and Samhain are now a team - their lag seems to be OK. I finally heard from Hoov and Sev - they are also official. So we are now at 7 teams. At Samhain's suggestion, we amended the point system slightly. If both losing partners concede the game, the winner will get all 32 points. If a team gets all the bases, they also automatically get all 32 points. These 2 minor changes are just commonsense. Imagine if you get your ass kicked after 5 minutes, having to sit around for another 15 or 20 minutes while the other team takes their time to pick up all the pills just to get points. Or imagine if you were losing and just decided to pick up your remaining pills and hide in deep sea. Both are pretty lame but both are encouraged by a pure points system, hence the change. Samhain thinks one can gain an unfair base advantage by starting both tanks in the extreme corners of the map. For what it's worth, he suggests starting nw corner+mid west vs. se corner+mid east. The debate has been going on in #bolo for over an hour now. We'll figure it out by 7:45. :) Jolo
