SAIL ENGINEERING

I LANSTON TYPE COMPANY I GERALD GIAMPA I

SAILING IS VERY TECHNICAL. Things must be organized, systems in place, there is little room for second guessing aboard a sailing vessel. This is as highly engineered as any engine, after all it is an engine far more complex than standard diesels. These ships require a complexity of rope, canvas and human resources.

I will, when not talking about typography, try to share with you the gravity of sailing complexity. Possibly you wish to know what sailing has to do with typography. Everything!

Economies of sail is defeated not by speed, as sail is often faster than general cargo ships, but predictability of arrival. Not to mention the small requirement of knowing both, how to tie knots, and fold canvas.

These days all there is to seamanship is knowing where the handle is on a paint brush. Knots, well, a granny knot would do.
