¶ THESE END PAPERS are composed entirely of printers' fleurons. Most of the fleurons were designed by Robert Granjon. This very complex work is ready for colour separations. Look at the white area where the pencil is pointing. This specific area is initial workings of colour subtraction of a Granjon Fleuron which is performed by a skilled hand working a sharp gravure. A portion of a lead flueron is carved away. Another of the identical unit will also get the reverse portion carved away. Now it takes two units to make one complete unit. Eache must be separately printed in different colours.
This enables the design to be free of optical blocking.
(NOTE: This method was invented by Gerald Giampa)
In later years freshly carved, newly cast, Granjon Fleurons, and others, were separated in this fashion. We had Jim Rimmer electro-deposit matrices.
From that time onward we cast ready for use.
