GREAT ITALIAN TYPE FACE
Stamperia Reale
¶ GIAMBATTISTA BODONI created this modern typeface in 1790 which served as the structural model for Sol Hess's faithful rendition. Hess made necessary adjustments for mechanical typesetting on Lanston's Monotype composition system.
Bodoni, No. 175 includes a highly unusual feature, 'French Oldstyle Figures'.
Giambattista Bodoni was born February 16th in 1740 Saluzzo, Italy. His father was also a printer. When Bodoni reached 18 years of age he became contractually indentured to the Vatican print shop.
Bodoni's most important works began after Bodoni was appointed as Director of the Duke of Parma's Royal Press, Stamperia Reale.
The Stamperia Reale published Greek, Latin and Italian manuscripts along with required ephemera for the court.
Although Bodoni's first typefaces were decorative in style he later came under the strong influence of the French typefounder, Firmin Didot.
