¶ NORTHLAND LETTERPRESS Composing Room: The proof press shown in the foreground is the larger of the two Vandercooks boasting a full 26" x 40" sheet capacity.
The wooden Hamilton dust proof cabinets had their type cases brimming with new type. Northland Letterpress had a non-distribution system in place. There were two stones, the smaller of the two is shown on the upper right edge of the photograph. Both were matching Hamilton wood coffins with marble stone tops.
Stones are used for locking type into a chase and planing, or levelling type on a flat surface. Sometimes make readies are performed on them. Marble has less spring than steel and is preferable for planing type. Steel has less maintenance.
This work is a separate trade of Stone Hands. Doesn't that just make you shiver?
