TWIST AND REPEAT FLEURONS
I LANSTON TYPE COMPANY I GERALD GIAMPA I ¶ THE JOHN DREYFUS book was a departure for me. In the past I had used far more complex printers' fleurons. A challenge with many surprises. This photograph illustrates a suite of printers' fleurons in developmental progression for the book bindings papers. I worked, which was normal procedure for me, through many possible designs, pulling multiple proofs before the faintest concept of a completed work would show itself. I never knew where the design was taking me in these sequential proofs. I called this "design by roller coaster ride". The design cycle was emotionally accelerating. There was a loss of control, a sense personal reduction overcame me. Also, usually I never knew how I picked the "final take" for the press. The work designed itself. I was its' witness, I was its' hands. This is not unique, many in the arts enjoy similar creative experiences. GERALD GIAMPA |
