¶ ERIC GILL'S foreword to a 'Treatise upon the Craft of Wood Engraving'.
Wil Hudson's typography shown here is simple, the text mirrors the block, the rubrication is traditional, the margins are luxurious.
In 1967 four-hundred and fifty copies of this little work was printed by Wil Hudson with a wood engraving by George Kuthan for The University of British Columbia.
In any event this job was printed after George Kuthan's untimely death. This particular piece combines the work of Giampa's initial introductory influences into the world of book building. George Kuthan sold him his platen press. Wil Hudson took Giampa's interest in typography very seriously. Hudson became Giampa's mentor.
The block caption Grouse Mountain in Wintertime makes Giampa homesick. Half way up Grouse Mountain is where Wil first set up his first shop in Canada. It was a basement level under a grocery store on the south-west corner of Upper Levels and Lonsdale. In those days Giampa recalls it was 27th and Lonsdale.
Giampa's Grandmother lived even higher up the mountain but only blocks away. Giampa grew up in the neighbourhood.
Hudson initially called his shop 'The Grouse Mountain Press' until he moved to Denman close to English Bay. Then he named it 'The Grouse Mountain Press & Bookshop'.
