MODERN DEVELOPMENTS

THIS IS A BRILLIANT addition to mechanical typesetting. It was developed by the English Monotype.

The units for each character were entered for the typeface, then the wedge settings. The the type could be set on the computer, spell checked etc. When all was done then the computer output to a controller paper slave machine as shown on the next page.

The operator had some work to do, such as keying in the set width and unit rows for each character before setting. This was something that needed to be done only once for each type style not taking into account media failures. This particular computer is in Harold Berliner's Typefoundry, Nevada City, California.

There is a computer driven paper controller punch mechanism attached to the side which is shown in this picture.

THE LANSTON TYPE COMPANY developed a similar but different system. Lanston's system differed in that both the caster and keyboard were computer driven. The computer would control opening and closing of air valves on the caster eliminating the paper tower altogether.

With this system PostScript fonts developed by Lanston were identical in unit rows and in character shapes as the original hot metal faces. This allowed spell checking, correcting and proofing on a laser printer. Great savings in economy was realized by eliminating keyboard paper. In those days approximately $3,000. of keyboard paper was used by each compositor.
