A PARTIAL VIEW of Lanston's type matrice manufacturing machinery can be seen in this photo. The automatic ram with the leather belt on the flywheel standing upright is a machine which stamped the type punches into the bronze. There were in total about seventeen machines to finish a single matrix. Some machines were used twice, one for each end.

The equipment operated to very fine tolerances. Microscopes were used on some operations and were built into the equipment. There were two height-to-paper machines, one for American height and one for English height matrices. These optics were to a very high standard and the engineering was amongst the finest. Complex to set up.

The Lanston height-to-paper cutter optics vibrated out of focus in the move from San Francisco. It took the engineers a long time to locate the character. A small bronze matrix became an enormous moonscape.
