LANSTON TYPE HEADS TO B.C.
INTERNATIONALTAKE OVER BID
I LANSTON TYPE COMPANY I GERALD GIAMPA I
¶ I PURCHASED the 'Lanston Type Library' from the type foundry of Mackenzie-Harris, 460 Bryant Street, San Francisco in 1989.
This is one of the several trucks rigged and loaded for the journey. While they were loading the machinery I managed to raise enough money to purchase Mackenzie-Harris. Some of the funds came from employees, other funds from their union. And then the total was matched by a patron. A church organ collector with a forty-five foot front door to his home. Then there was a misfortunate accident. My lawyers recommended an immediate retreat back to Vancouver with all the machinery.
Otherwise I would probably still be in San Francisco.
Andrew Hoyem of Arion Press, a tenant of the foundry luckily purchased the operation and has been successful with the venture.
But the Lanston Monotype Machine Company's punch cutting department went north to Canada.
