APTLY NAMED

I LANSTON TYPE COMPANY I GERALD GIAMPA I

GERALD GIAMPA had measurable success in his youth. He purchased his own home in Lynn Valley. Giampa then purchased this vessel.

He lived aboard the Ubique for some years after selling the house in preference for the sea.

Giampa skippered the vessel through seventy-two knot winds. For those that know nothing of the sea, nautical miles are more than land miles. Seventy-two knot winds are moving very close to hurricane force winds.

In 'The Last Grain Race' by Eric Newby describes the following.

'Admiral Beaufort's Numerals, 11. Storm 60 knot winds, description: 'Storm staysails or trysail only'.

Admiral Beaufort's Numerals, 12, Hurricane, over 80 knot winds, description: No canvas can stand.'

All of this in the middle of the night Giampa with his daughter and her mother on board. That evening cargo ships dragged anchor and beached themselves on English Bay. Vessels and lives were lost. Some boats were destroyed at their moorings in so-called safe harbours.

This was the end with his relationship with the mother of his daughter. Boats suddenly made her nervous.
