¶ THIS IS ONE of the Original Heidelberg platens. Giampa had owned several of them at Cobblestone Press but only one at Northland Letterpress on Pender Street. They were the finest automatic platens ever built.
In spite of the fact that these Heidelbergs almost never broke down Giampa still maintained a steadfast preventative maintenance program. Heidelberg mechanics visited on a regular basis. Not a single day's production was ever lost because of mechanical failure on these machines.
Giampa was an oil fanatic. He only used above factory specified non-detergent oil and never subscribed to the nonsense that you can over-oil a machine. Giampa's philosophy was always to fill an empty oil hole. 'Clean the oil holes on a regular basis. If an oil hole never needs oil find out what is wrong with it. It 's plugged. Avoid using offset sprays.'
Giampa says: 'Yes, I know oil can get on the paper so what's wrong with a careful wipedown. Makes for a cleaner machine.'
