¶ BRUCE ROGERS designed Metropolitan Oldstyle in 1914 for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Rogers modelled Metropolitan Oldstyle after the Nicolas Jenson typeface of 1470. As a model Jenson's face has inspired many different typefaces giving very diverse results. For instance the William Morris cutting of The Golden Type, Lanston Jenson Oldstyle. The resemblance between these two cuttings are very strongly opposite in both feeling and structural interpretation.
Metropolitan, perhaps, is one of the most beautiful typefaces available.
Metropolitan Oldstyle was later re-named Centaur® for a book Bruce Rogers designed and printed.
A foundry version of the face was first cut and punched by Robert Wiebking.
In 1929 the Lanston Monotype Machine Company and Monotype® Corporation England produced this face in a joint venture.
I am of the personal opinion that Metropolitan Oldstyle is one of the most beautiful typefaces ever cut. Momentum for my opinion is gained with the inclusion of the Italic drawn by Frederick Warde.
¶ NOTES; Bruce Rogers and Frederick Warde were both masters in their work with printer's fleurons. Frederick Warde had been Beatrice Warde's husband. He later fobbed her off on Stanley Morison.
Bruce Rogers, book designer, was not a type designer by profession. Rogers produced several typefaces, one of which Lanston is considering digitizing. The working name for the typeface is 'Branches', which was never released for public consumption.
