I LANSTON TYPE COMPANY I GERALD GIAMPA I ¶ ARTISTS PROOF of Gerald Giampa's proposed title page for 'In Praise of Scribes', translated by Michael Baats. One of many evolutions. The actual title page of 'In Praise of Scribes' pales by comparison. No fault of Gerald Giampa. The Alcuin Society fired Giampa because they were after an 'Instant print job' designed by an escapee from an old folk's home. Giampa called him Mr. Rickter Scales, when the fellow signed cheques, small and not many of them, he held his fountain pen, and wiggled the table. For those guessing, we are not speaking of the furniture manufacturer. Gerald Giampa was forever changing his works. People would come to think he was finished and the type formes would re-organized themselves just before going to press. So this proof would never resemble the final results. Giampa has never bothered to view the Alcuin Societies geriatric consensus production. This entire event amused the newspaper public of Vancouver for several on going weeks. Lawyers got involved. Many funny stories were never told, 'yet'. Some examples illustrating how he would work were shown at the Burnaby Art Gallery. Giampa is sure, whether they know it or not, the Alcuin Society wishes they had managed their affairs better and finished this book at Cobblestone Press. The book they finally gave birth to should have been aborted along with some of the directors. For reasons 'known to him and other craftsman' the culture of this society has always conflicted with the intentions of their charter. The Alcuin Society may have fallen into some luck with new energy coming from Bob Reid. Bob Reid is a typographer of extra-ordinary merit. GERALD GIAMPA |
