Recap of Week 3, Spring 02

Sunday night, 2 full divisions showed up with Deathwalker left alone,
so Min was kind enough take him on 1x1, twice. Sticks lost 0-3 in div1,
while Silverado won 3-0 in div2. The obvious story is the battle for #1 
between Underdog and Mac. They went into Sunday night just 6 points apart,
and essentially tied each other, each beating Sticks twice and losing once
when playing against the other allied with Suicidjky. In other words,
Suicidjky was the real winner here, going in 3rd in his division but 
managing to ally well with each of the top 2 seeds and beating the other
one both times. That's why he earned the most points. If Suicidjky had lost
against 1 of the top 2 seeds, that guy would have gone 3-0; if he lost twice,
then Suicidjky would've been the one going 0-3, so really it was all in his
hands the whole time. Take note - this is how you move ahead in IBL - by
being consistent, allying well with different people, and winning the tough
games.

Meanwhile in div2, Silverado essentially took 100 points away from DarkOmeN
by beating him twice. This on top of his good 2-1 showing on Wednesday's
div2 makes Silverado the big winner of the week, improving by 7 ranks and
a whopping 149 points. If we had cheerleaders (/me looks at Liz), I'm sure
they'd be jumping up and down.

In the 1x1, Min was such a huge favorite going into it that he
hardly took any points at all away from Deathwalker. It was still worth
playing though, because if Deathwalker had managed to upset Min, he would
have taken away a huge amount of points.

On Wednesday night, there were 3 full divisions, although just barely. Once
again div1 was full of excitement. Underdog and Mac go at it again, but
this time they didn't get a good chance to prove who was the real top gun.
AJR's lag made the games all but unplayable, and Suicidjky apparently
threw some or all of his games in disgust, ending up losing 0-3. Although
it's not AJR's fault that his network sucks, unfortunately he will not be
able to play IBL until and unless he can consistently play 2x2's without
lagging. It was decided that the games should count anyway, since they
were played out and reported. (FYI, if you should ever be in a division
where lag is intolerable, all 4 players need to decide unanimously to
call off one or more games, or to try to find a substitute to start over.
Otherwise if you finish a game, it will count. This is the only way to
avoid massive whining afterwards when people would inevitably demand that
certain games be thrown out for one reason or another.) So in the end,
Underdog and Mac tied each other yet again, and their ratings reflect that,
with a statistical dead heat of just 1 point separating them.

In div2, lethal unfortunately continues his bad luck and loses 0-3,
making him the big point loser of the week (sorry man). This is just the
system doing its job, correcting for people who might have been rated a
little too high initially. There is nothing wrong with having a lower
rating, it just means you get to play with people closer to your skill
level in the very specific context of IBL-style games, which can be very
different than other 2x2 or 1x1 games due to the round robin rotation of
allies. More equal matchups mean more fun games for everybody. Also,
having a lower rating lets you improve yourself in a less stressful
environment where you don't have the rest of the pack gunning for you.

Finally, Wednesday's div3 was a grudge match between ADD-boy and ihauflad.
ADD-boy managed to win the crucial 3rd game which was worth the most points,
in the process also ensuring the 0-3 fate for ihauflad. Better luck next
time!

Overall, it was impressive, with 3 divisions on each night, 18 people 
participating on one or both nights. Starting this week, those who have
been absent 3 times or more (i.e. since the beginning of the season) will
no longer be shown in the short ratings list, just to avoid cluttering it
up. They maintain their ratings and rank on the full list, just in case
they decide to start playing again.
