CANADIAN LOGGING POET
I LANSTON TYPE COMPANY I GERALD GIAMPA I ¶ PETER TROWER, POET left, Gerald Giampa on the right. This was the porch off of Giampa's office in the former Pender Street location. Giampa was initially introduced to Peter's brilliance through John Newlove, another gifted Canadian poet. The first book Giampa read of Peter Trower's was 'Moving Through the Mystery', illustrated by Jack Wise and published by Talon Books in 1969. Giampa says: 'A particular surprise was Peter's most effectively written nightmarish horror poem. On the other hand, I think some people view all poems as horror poems.' Alex Widen of Sandhill Press is a fine printer and publisher occupying the former studio of Jim Rimmer on Hastings Street. It is merely a block and a half from Lanston's old home on Pender Street. Shortly after this photo was taken Giampa and Alex visited Peter Trower at his house on the Sunshine Coast. Giampa was looking for new premises in Powell River before deciding to move to Prince Edward Island. Some will know Peter Trower as 'Pete the Poet'. |
PETER TROWER, CANADIAN POET
¶ NO LONGER PUBLISHING POETRY at this juncture of my life. I had been strucken by illness, still I had poet friends such as Peter Trower. Also I was well remembered in the Vancouver publishing scene as the only full time publisher of poetry without 'Canada Council Grants'. Many poets will remember better these stairs, and ealier poets including Al Ginsberg would have remembered this door way. I published several Al Ginsberg broadsides. Unfortunately I only have one poetry book that somewhat survived the tidal wave in Prince Edward Island, but I am sure some will remember this book by Robin Blaser. Some others may remember this book by Ezra Pound. I published under the imprint of Cobblestone Press broadsides of George Bowering. We published many books of poetry but please don't ask about the lost works of Charles Olson. They are gone many years ago. We have nothing for sale and offer no advice. My typographical audience certainly remembers The ATF Newsletter. |
